Where should you start when Ethernet stops working?
Compare the Ethernet cable and router port before changing software. Record the wired connection's status, inspect its adapter in Device Manager, and use the results to choose the next step. Keep network reset last because it removes adapter settings. On managed computers, involve the administrator; damaged hardware needs qualified repair, not an improvised fix.
This sequence focuses on a personal Windows 11 computer with a failed wired connection. Menu wording can vary by build. It is a documented troubleshooting approach, not a report of hands-on testing. Save open work before interrupting a connection or restarting, and leave workplace equipment to its administrator.
Can you isolate the cable and port first?
Dell's current wired troubleshooting guide starts with visible cable damage, comparing that cable on another device, and trying another Ethernet port. Use an accessible, undamaged replacement cable and an available router LAN port intended for local devices. Leave the provider's Internet/WAN connection in place.
Treat this as a controlled comparison: keep the computer and port unchanged while swapping the cable, then keep the working cable unchanged while comparing ports. Stop using visibly damaged hardware; arrange qualified repair. Do not open equipment or try to straighten internal contacts.
Our test sheet records observations rather than declaring a component dead:
| Comparison | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Original cable, original port | Starting Windows message |
| Replacement cable, original port | Same message or changed result |
| Replacement cable, another permitted LAN port | Which port and result |
| Same cable and port, another authorized computer | Whether the result follows the computer |
A single successful comparison is useful evidence to report, not permission to replace an entire router. If you cannot make a comparison, write “not tested.” An incomplete honest record is more useful than a confident guess.
Does a dock or an indicator light change the investigation?
A laptop's wired socket may belong to a dock or USB adapter rather than the laptop itself. Dell's Ethernet hardware reference distinguishes built-in ports, USB-to-Ethernet adapters and docking stations. Check the exact accessory's compatibility and driver requirements; matching the connector shape is only part of the check.
Record the route: laptop, dock or adapter, cable, router port. An alternative compatible adapter is a hardware change, not just a cable change.
Read port lights against the exact device manual. Dell describes light patterns as link and activity indicators. A lit socket does not establish that your browser can reach a website. Record the pattern without translating every amber light into “broken.”
What does Windows report for Ethernet?
Open Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet on current Windows 11. Microsoft's network settings guide also places connection status near the top of Network & internet and shows the IPv4 address within Ethernet details.
Copy the exact wording, whether it says disconnected, unidentified, or connected without useful access. Do not turn a label into a diagnosis. Beside it, record whether the same computer can browse over Wi-Fi and whether another household device works.
For a clean wired browsing comparison, temporarily turn off Wi-Fi using its Windows control, provided that will not interrupt essential work or remote support. Restore it afterward. This is our test-design recommendation: record which connection you actually tested.
If several devices fail, follow home network recovery. If the failure is wireless, use the connected-without-internet guide. Neither outcome calls for immediately deleting the Ethernet adapter.
Can you read the address configuration without resetting it?
Search Start for Command Prompt, open it normally, and enter:
ipconfig
Microsoft's command reference says the command without parameters displays IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, subnet mask and default gateway for adapters. This is an observation step; you are not entering an address or changing a resolver.
Find the Ethernet block, not a Wi-Fi or virtual adapter. Note missing values or messages. Keep output private; send relevant details through official support.
Do not append a collection of commands from an unrelated fix. In particular, /release discards the current DHCP address configuration and disables TCP/IP on affected automatically configured adapters. It is not another display option. A support-directed change needs its own reason and recovery plan.
Where is the wired adapter in Device Manager?
Search Start for Device Manager, then expand Network adapters. Identify the Ethernet device using your computer or accessory documentation. Do not choose the Wi-Fi device simply because it is listed first.
Microsoft's Device Manager guide explains that device information includes status and driver details. Right-click the relevant device and open Properties. Review General, Driver and Events; copy the error text and driver information before changing anything. A yellow exclamation mark indicates a reported problem, not its cause by itself.
If you cannot confidently identify the adapter, stop there and ask the manufacturer. The useful support question is “Which entry belongs to this model's wired connection?” Include the model and any dock model. Do not uninstall several entries to find out which one mattered.
Should you update or roll back its driver?
Use Microsoft's driver guidance: Windows Update supplies many hardware drivers. Device Manager also offers Update driver and an automatic search. For manual installation, obtain the matching Windows version and architecture from the manufacturer's official site.
If failure began after a recent driver update, the adapter's Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver is the relevant reversal to discuss with support. Administrator permissions are required. Follow the prompts, including a restart if requested. If unavailable, ask the manufacturer about the correct previous package.
Uninstalling a device is disruptive. Save work and arrange an offline official replacement driver before considering it. Windows attempts reinstallation after restart; success is not guaranteed. Do not remove your only working connection without a recovery route. Our Bluetooth troubleshooting guide covers the separate wireless device.
When is network reset justified?
Microsoft's Ethernet guide directs Windows 11 users to the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help.
Network reset is a last, disruptive configuration step. It removes installed network adapters and their settings; after restart, adapters are reinstalled with defaults. VPN software or virtual switches may need reinstalling and setting up again. Prepare configuration records and recovery instructions first; managed devices require their administrator.
On Windows 11: Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Read the confirmation before choosing Reset now. Connections may become public afterward; review sharing needs separately.
If the remaining evidence points specifically to name resolution, use the DNS investigation. Otherwise hand support the comparison sheet and exact messages. A clear stopping point is part of a useful fix.
